Permission for Activities not Permitted by Status of Residence
International students who would like to do a part-time job need to obtain this work permit from the Immigration Bureau.
Starting from January 2010, international students need to apply for the work permit by themselves in person.
Also, starting from July 2010, international students of the University of Tokyo do not need to obtain the work permit when they work as a Research Assistant or a Teaching Assistant at the university.
The Certificate of the permission is issued in about two to three weeks after the application, so international students who plan to do a part-time job in near future but have not found a job yet are encouraged to apply for it in advance.
International students are limited to 28 hours of part-time work per week, and the distribution of the hours is unrestricted but 8 hours a day during summer or winter holidays. Postgraduate Research Students are limited to 14 hours of part-time work per week.
And never be engaged in the sex industry and entertainment business (e.g. pachinko).
Part time work is not permitted during leaves of absence from the university or after change of the visa status.

If the address or the period of stay has been changed, please report it to the City Office before application. - Passport
If the period of stay will be expired within one month, apply for the workpermit after extension of period of stay.
International students residing in Tokyo, submit the above items to Tokyo Regional Immigration Bureau (map). International students residing outside Tokyo, submit them to each branch office.
Visa Extension
International students who continue studying in Japan, need to apply for an extension of their period of stay. Applications can be accepted starting three months before your period of stay ends.
Items required for application
- Application for Extension of Period of Stay (available at Immigration Bureau offices and at ISAR , and it is downloadable from the Ministry of Justicefs website) Submit application forms gFor Applicant part 1 and part 2g to ISAR after filling out and then the application forms “For organization part 1 and part 2” will be issued by the university.
- Passport
- Certificate of Enrollment
- Transcript (or Certificate of research activities in case of a research student)
- Certificate of Scholarship( if you are receiving a scholarship)
- Resident Card
- Handling charge: 4,000

Change of Status of Residence
International Students who study or researches at the University of Tokyo are required to obtain the status of residence gcollege studenth. Accordingly students who have a different status or residence are asked to change it to gcollege studenth.
Items required for application

Change of Status of Residence after Graduation
International students who wish to remain in Japan and seek employment after graduation can do so by changing the status of residence to gdesignated activitiesh, provided that they obtain a letter of recommendation from the University. The status of residence has a six-month period of stay and can be renewed one time maximum, making it possible to remain in Japan for up to one year. This system is not available to research students.
Items required for application
- Documents certifying that a student can cover all the living expenses during the period of stay or, if the expenses will be supported by someone else, a document certifying the sponsorfs ability to support the student, and a letter explaining the background behind the sponsorfs support.
- Document certifying that the student completed a degree program at the University where the students were most recently enrolled.
- Letter of recommendation from the University where the student were most recently enrolled,Indicating the intention of staying in Japan to seek employmentThe studentfs guidance professor cannot write the letter.
- Evidence that the student are seeking employment
Also, students who wish to take up employment after graduation in March need to change college student status of residence to a working visa, and the application can be accepted after December 1 of the previous year.
Obtaining Family Visas
If International Students wish to have family members (spouse and children) come to Japan, and live together, those family members need to obtain visas with the status of residence gdependenth. International Students already in Japan can apply for Certificate of Eligibility (dependent visa) at the Immigration Bureau on behalf of the family members.

Items required for application
- Application for Certificate of Eligibility (available at Immigration Bureau offices and at ISAR , and it is downloadable from the Ministry of Justicefs website ate address)
- Two ID photos of the relevant family member taken within the last 6 months (H:4 cm x W:3 cm, plain background)
- Self-addressed envelope with a 380 stamp
- Document certifying the family memberfs relationship with the student, such as a marriage certificate (spouse), or a birth certificate (child)
- Copy of alien registration card or passport of the student
- Document certifying that the family member will have sufficient financial means to live in Japan, such as a scholarship recipient certificate.
